We notified the authorities as soon as the damages and losses were discovered. However, Law enforcement was evidently restrained by the District Attorney and they were thus unable to prevent the perpetrators, who were no more than squatters on our property, from continuing their burglary, vandalism, and even extortion! Witnesses came forward stating that they had bought items from these squatters with the understanding that the Sorianos did in fact own the property as they had stated to them. They were shown similar forged documents as would later be shown to Police Investigators. We believed that armed with the knowledge that these documents were forged instruments, law enforcement would finally be permitted to enforce our rights!
The District Attorney believes that these crimes are a matter for the civil courts. We don’t pretend to understand the quirk of law that permitted known perpetrators to continue their criminal acts, even after being caught. What we do know is that they were free to return to our property with barely a hiccup, and to carry on with their determined destruction of our property. We find it difficult to understand how the immediacy of their active criminal behavior, or a crime in progress would have been mitigated by a civil court. The DA seems to base his "opinion" on the fraudulent statements and forged documents provided by the Sorianos, while he completely ignores the sworn affidavits of both attorneys and the victims themselves. Something here isn't passing the smell test!
What happened to our constitutional protections, and where is justice hiding these days? Out of the goodness of our hearts, we permitted the Sorianos to occupy a space on our property, even though it was with a stipulation for no longer than two months while they were in search of permanent accommodations. We literally gave them food, clothing and shelter! We assisted them with enrolling their daughter in the local school system. As the saying goes: “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished!” Simply put, and what we find it difficult to comprehend is that according to the District Attorney, all of these “good deeds” constituted a verbal contract!(?) Since when is a purported "verbal contract" a license to Burglarize? Vandalize?Extort? Why isn’t a purported "verbal contract" rescinded with a verbal contract? Why didn’t this purported "verbal contract" terminate at the end of the two month verbal provision? Is a purported "verbal contract" unidirectional and/or unilatteral? What in the world has happened to good old fashioned "common sense?" "Common Decency?" "Logic?" Don't we expect those whom we elect to uphold the rights of the electorate? Forget about Justice! Justice took a vacation here!
When asked to leave, the Sorianos then attempted to extort money from us…they called it, “cash for keys.” We called it extortion! They remained on our property for ten months, and we have been told that their current whereabouts are unknown to law enforcement.
So, the next time that you consider inviting somebody onto your property, and unless you have unlimited resources for litigation, remember that you will have given up your rights to any legal protections for acts of Burglary, Vandalism, Conspiracy, Fraud, Extortion, Embezzlement and the reporting of false incidents against you and others. To most Americans, these are all criminal acts that for some unknown quirk of the law, you will be on your own when seeking legal remedies. Law enforcement will not be there to enforce your rights!
People like the Sorianos go through life laughing at our system of laws. They know that their cunning ways will prevail, while they mock law enforcement. They gain immense amusement by reporting false incidents that cause dispatchers to mobilize units from all ends of the county in the pursuit of phantom villains. Their ability to manipulate our system, and get away with their criminal activity emboldens them. These are serious crimes to you and to me. Unfortunately, when they are perpetrated against you, you will find that your legal protections are but a myth. Remember the movie, “Pacific Heights?”
